Matthew 13:44" The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."
Matthew 13:22"And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful."
I am convinced that the majority of "Christians" in America are success-seekers above all else. If they had to choose between being comfortably wealthy or obeying God, they would choose the wealth.
So, you are thinking to yourself, "But that choice is a hypothetical situation. I have never had to choose between God and wealth, and if I ever do have to, of course I will choose God."
Choosing between God and wealth is not a hypothetical situation. It is a choice we as Americans make every day. And if I had to guess, I'd say that 99.9% of us (myself included) choose wealth.
We think that God would want us to be happy.
We think that God would never place such a burden on us like asking us to give up our means of "supporting ourselves."
Matthew 6:31-33 (New American Standard Bible)
31"Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'
32"For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
We do the opposite of this passage, don't we?
We make sure we have the money to pay for dinner and for clothes. We make sure that we have the "essentials" of life.
After we are certain that we can make our lives comfortable, then we think about throwing in a little "community service" to add to our resume.
What does this way of life say about us?
Our actions are testifying against us:
- We believe that there is not a life after this one. Otherwise, why would we not even wonder about the next life long enough to stop seeking our own pleasure in this one?
- We care about our stuff way more than other people. Otherwise, we would not think God were asking too much when He says
"If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."Matthew 19:21 - Our god is ourselves. Otherwise, we would believe that we should serve God, and that God is not obligated to serve us.
Matthew 6:21"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
What do you put your heart and soul into? What do you spend your time and energy trying to accomplish? Why?
